Overview

Position:  Histology IHC/Special Stains, Lead

 

Position Summary:  Leads the team in day-to-day operations of Histology IHC and Special Studies. 

 

Scope:  Promotes quality teamwork by serving as a role model for behavior.  Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory.  Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations.  Works with minimal direction; consults with department leadership team and manager as needed.  Operates general laboratory equipment, including by not limited to:  telephones, computer keyboards and CRT.  Excellent leadership and communication skills required. 

Responsibilities

Principle Responsibilities:

  • Flexibility in scheduling is required (adjusting hours and weekends)
  • Must be an excellent facilitator and communicator
  • Must be detail oriented
  • Must be able to perform all functions of department IHC and Special Stains
  • Primary responsibility is Immunohistochemistry and Special Stains
  • Ability to cover all aspects of routine Histology
  • Maintains all records and documentation required to manage daily workflow, inspection preparedness, QC and QA monitors
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills required to successfully perform as a team member in a constantly changing environment
  • Promotes and maintains a positive and professional work environment
  • Must meet or exceed all department standards of productivity
  • Problem solving skills required in this position
  • Performs support tasks as needed to ensure timely completion of work
  • Ensures the accuracy and efficiency of support services provided by the department
  • Coordinate department coverage with the department Supervisor
  • Ensures personnel maintain a clean and well-organized work area
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors and manager
  • Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to employees, clients, and patients
  • Ensures compliance with ALL local, federal, CLIA, CAP, safety and OSHA guidelines

      • Department meetings and continuing education at CPL
      • Team meetings

Qualifications

Education: 

Required – HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certification

Preferred – QIHC (ASCP) certification

 

Experience: 

Minimum – Two years of experience in a fast paced, high volume laboratory with documented Immunohistochemistry and special stain training.  Experience with Ventana Benchmark XT and Benchmark Ultras and Dako Artisan instrumentation.

 Knowledge of FISH prep and analysis

Preferred – Three to five years in a fast paced, high volume laboratory with Lead and/or supervisory experience. 

 

Skills:  Ability to promote professionalism, growth and teamwork.  Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory clients.  Ability to adapt to a changing work environment by organizing and prioritizing time and resources in order to produce the most effective work performance.  Ability to assess work tasks, recognize limitations, and request assistance when appropriate.

 

Reporting Relationship:  Reports to the Histology Supervisor 

 

Physical Requirements:  Requires light to medium lifting

 

Environmental Demands:  Works in temperature controlled environment.  May encounter hazards common to a pathological laboratory and come into contact with contagious pathogens and various laboratory chemicals.  May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation.  May be required to work with time constraints and in crisis situations.
